‘3D STEREO CASTE’ is a documentary series by A S Ajith Kumar that would try to capture caste in the music sphere. The attempt would be to understand how caste plays a key role in determining the practices in music, defining and classifying music styles and in determining music making, performance and listening habits in music and how musicians experience caste.
The first part of the series has been completed. It covers the field of Chenda (a percussion instrument), cinematic dance and the ‘folk music’ performances in Kerala. The premiere of the first part of the series will be held at Chenkal Choola, a dalit colony in Trivandrum on October 29th at 6 pm.
Chenkal Choola was selected as the venue for the premiere because this is a place where a lot of artists – singers, drummers, dancers, ganamela artists – live and a lot of musical activity takes place but is considered as a low place and is never acknowledged in the musical map of Kerala because it is a dalit colony.
The film will also be screened at the University of Hyderabad campus on November 1st and at the English and Foreign Languages University campus on November 2nd.
