Prof. G. Aloysius is currently scholar- in- Residence in the Department of Social Exclusion Studies. He is an established scholar and known across the world for his quite influential research works such as Nationalism Without A Nation in India (2009) published through OUP (tenth reprint) and Religion as Emancipatory Identity (2000) published through New Age International Pvt. Ltd. His edited book Collected Works of Iyothee Thassar (1999 & 2003, in 3Vols.) in Tamil is a great contribution to Dalit intellectual history. His other significant edited book is Lakshmi Narasu’s Religion of the Modern Buddhism (2002). Beside this he has published number of booklets through Critical Quest and articles in national and international reputed journals on sociological aspects of Indian nationalism, cultural politics of caste and caste based movements in south India and the question of tribal identity and autonomy. Beside his serious engagement with research he is also associated with social and tribal movements in India. He spent about a decade in Jharkhand tribal areas helping the tribal in setting schools for children, supporting advocacy and human right activities and collecting primary data and background literature. The present talk is based on his recent trip to North East India.
