Discussion on Friday, 31 May, 2013, at India International Centre, New Delhi.
Joint Action Front for Democratic Education
Delhi University is going to introduce Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) without a national debate on its merits or demerits. We believe that the education policy must be uniform in the country and should be decided by Parliament and not by a Vice Chancellor. There are nearly 600 Universities in India and if every vice Chancellor starts acting like this, there will be utter chaos in the country. Under this system there will be three categories of degrees awarded at different exit points – diploma on completion of two years, bachelor degree at three years and only those completing four years will get the Honours degree.
Apart from the additional financial burden of the extra year, this system will sharpen social hierarchies as only those from privileged sections of society will be able to reach the final year of the undergraduate proramme. Students from rural and poor background and SC/ST/OBC categories will be hit hard as they will be again compelled to study Maths, English and Science.
Eminent academicians, intellectuals and politicians will get together to share their views on 31st May, 2013 in Seminar Halls 1, 2, and 3, Kamla Devi Block, India International Center, Lodhi Road, New Delhi at 6 Pm. We request you to participate and extend your support.
