Indefinite Relay Hunger Strike (from 11.00 am, 30th July, 2012) for the Implementation of SC, ST, and OBC Reservation in Delhi University

In the garb of protecting seats reserved for SC/ST from fraudulent certificates, and providing free registration forms, which is freely available to the general candidates online, the DU Administration has instituted a totally non-transparent process, which is an abomination. Enumerating the discriminatory and harassing practices will take up several pages, so we would not even attempt to do it.
The University also makes a mockery of the percentage of seats for the reserved categories by fixing the number of reserved seats on the basis of the “sanctioned” strength. However, the admissions in the “General Category” almost always exceed the sanctioned strength up to two or three times in some cases. RTI conducted in around 30 colleges in 2010 revealed that on an average General Category seats were filled in excess by 30% of the sanctioned strength. It was also revealed that in the very same colleges Reserved Category seats were filled 30% below the sanctioned strength.
Thus, year after year the University has been robbing the seats from the SC, ST, and OBC students and depriving them the 15, 7.5, and 27 percentages of seats provided by the Central Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admission) Act of 2006.
We demand an immediate stop to this practice. We request all democratic minded individuals and organizations to come forward in support of our struggle for justice. The following are our demands:
• Comply with the MHRD directive to fulfill reservation for SC (15%), ST (7.5%), and OBC (27%) on total admissions made (as per letter No. F.4-24/2012/-Desk(U) dated 10th July, 2012).
• Extend the last date of admission for SC, ST, & OBC to ensure that the percentage is fulfilled on total admission.
• Make the counseling for SC and ST transparent by publishing a daily status report of available seats and allow guardians to accompany the candidates to the counseling desk.
