Kousalya, a Devar caste girl from Pazhani, and Sankar, a Dalit from Komaralingam, got married 8 months ago amidst strong opposition from the girl’s family to their love marriage. They were living in Komaralingam.
Today, in the afternoon, the couple was attacked by a gang of three when they were at the Udumalaipettai bus stand. The attackers included the girl’s maternal uncle. They were first taken to Udumalaipettai Govt. Hospital for first aid and then to Coimbatore Govt. Hospital. Sankar succumbed to his injuries on the way and his wife Kousalya is struggling for her life.
