‘Reclaiming the Legacy of Mahatma Ayyankali‘
Speaker: Mohammed Irshad
28th August marks the 151st Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Ayyankali one of the anti-caste superstars of India. He walked fearlessly on the streets of Travancore challenging the perversity of Brahmanism.
Holding his hands, Dalits all over Kerala, walked to the schools, markets, legislature, claiming their right to free movement, right to education and the right to shape their own lives. Ayyankali organized and pioneered the first successful agrarian strike in the history of India. However, his legacy was systematically excluded from Kerala’s public sphere, thanks to our ‘official’ historians.
Today, we would try to reclaim his legacy and understand his contribution.
